Strip Transformation Underway
By Joe Wheeler

Not all high rises will get off the ground, but a project under heavy construction is the MGM Grand towers located in the middle of the world's busiest resort corridor.

The Signature at MGM Grand is comprised of three towers with nearly 600 suites in each, directly adjacent to the MGM Grand resort.

Several thousand construction workers are busily finishing Tower B with Tower C set for completion in 2007.  Tower A has long been sold out with prices ranging from $500,000 a unit to $1.7 million for top-floor luxury suites with views of the entire south strip.

Ben Ozuna, Safety Rep for General Contractor Marnell Carreo, has been riding shotgun on the safety needs of the project.  When he arrived on the scene several months ago, the project had an overall injury rate of 17 percent - his efforts have seen the accident rate plummet to a mere 2 percent.  He and fellow safety rep Eric Terzoli stay on top of things - literally.  "We walk every tower, every day," Ozuna said.  "OSHA walked the job, and found only a dingle minor housekeeping violation, nothing significant."

Bombard Electric Doing the Job

One of Las Vegas ' largest electrical contractors is handling the subcontract for the towers.  Bombard Electric, in Las Vegas since 1982, has taken on many of the largest jobs in the valley, including the Wynn Las Vegas, the Red Rock Station and Ceasars' new tower.

John Hastings, safety director of Bombard Electric, invited the Builders Insurance Safety Committee to tour the work being done the MGM project, and recently joined the committee as they walked Tower B.

"I thought it would be good for some of the committee members to see a job like this," Hastings said.  "Some of the residential guys should see what we do on a large scale project."  Nearly 30 representatives of various companies joined Hastings for the tour - and got a peek into the work that goes into creating a luxury lifestyle.
